States with Expanded Medicaid Show Increase in Buprenorphine Prescriptions

(August 21, 2019)

The Morning Consult reports on a recent study conducted by the Urban Institute which identifies a correlation between expanded Medicaid and an increase in buprenorphine prescriptions. Because Medicaid covers the cost of buprenorphine maintenance treatment, states that have approved Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act have been able to improve patient access to treatment. The Morning Consult elaborates on findings from the research:

Of the 6.2 million prescriptions for buprenorphine maintenance treatment dispensed nationally in 2018, up from 1.3 million in 2011, the report found that more than three-fourths were filled in states that elected to expand Medicaid through the ACA or a waiver by April 2014.
